2020 Maribyrnong Plate Runner-By-Runner Guide

#1 Ingratiating (2)

Despite sweating up noticeably behind the barriers on debut prior to his win in the Maribyrnong Trial, the godolphin colt had a touch of class on his side to win in impressive style. He defeated the handy General Beau who was a short odds-on commodity, and if that win was anything to go by, he should be fighting out the finish in the Maribyrnong Plate. He and the runner up put a significant space on the remainder of the field, and his race day experience up the Flemington straight could be crucial.

#2 Finance Tycoon (7)

The Dabernig and Hayes colt was well in the market on debut, and finished runner up to the aforementioned General Beau. He was the leader on that day and had jumpout okay prior to his debut, and will only benefit from that run. He had a four week freshen in between runs and his experience down the Flemington straight may prove pivotal in him fighting out the finish. He maps to be the leader in the race, and may take some running down if he gets a quiet time out in front.

#3 I Am War (4)

In a very similar race to the Maribyrnong Trial the Trevor Andrews gelding has over seven lengths to make up on the market favourite Ingratiating off that debut effort. Despite settling last he was able to beat home half the field, but looks to be a touch outclassed in this small field and will be battling a long way out from home.

#4 Treporti (4)

Danny O’Brien and Jamie Kah team up with this 2YO colt who was sent around as a well backed favourite on debut at Bendigo two weeks ago and will be looking to improve getting back onto a firmer track after going around on debut on a Heavy 9. At $19 he looks to be a touch of overs, based on the fact he will only benefit from that race day experience and with his first look at Flemington he is worth including in your exotics.

#5 Asternishing (5)

It’s hard to get too excited about the Mick Bell colt who only managed to beat one runner home in the Inglis Banner on Cox Plate day and meets a tougher race here at his second start. We’re happy to let him go around here, without any of our hard earned money.

#6 Gulf Of Suez (9)

Ciaron Maher and David Eustace team up with John Allen for their gelding out of Fighting Sun x Pan Jinlian who is on debut. He gets the blinkers on for the first time and initially opened up on the second line of betting but has drifted significantly since markets opened due to support for other runners. If there is market support on race day then he is one to add into your exotics.

#7 Marine One (3)

Lloyd Kennewell and Mark Zahra team up with the 2YO colt out of Capitalist after he showed plenty of ability in a recent jumpout. Despite being on debut, he has already seen plenty of support in the market and looks the only obvious danger to the favourite in what looks a thin race when it comes to the runners who have already made their debut outside of the favourite.

#8 Own The Night (8)

The second of the two Maher and Eustace debutants has been solid in the market since they opened and as is the case with the stablemate he will go around with the Blinkers on. He comes to his debut off a solid jumpout and if he can handle the Flemington straight on race day, there’s no reason why he can’t be in the finish.

#9 Dosh (6)

Graeme Begg opted to scratch his filly from the Inglis Banner at The Valley on Cox Plate day, despite some heavy backing at big odds. Prior to that nomination at The Valley she led throughout in a field of three at a Caulfield jump out and looked to have plenty of ability. The filly out of Rich Enuff will be right there in the finish when the whips are cracking if that jumpout is anything to go by.
