2017 Golden Slipper market update and latest news

Houtzen
Houtzen is the current favourite for the 2017 Golden Slipper at Rosehill this Saturday

THE world’s richest race for two-year-olds runs at Rosehill this Saturday and punters are chomping at the bit to bet into the 2017 Golden Slipper market.

There is currently three high-class juveniles at single figure odds which includes stellar last start winner Houtzen and also 2017 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Catchy.

Catchy lines up for Lindsay Park which trained three of the first four home in the Blue Diamond and the team will have four runners in this Saturday’s feature.

Included in the four is Saturday winner Tulip which has come through the run well according to head trainer David Hayes.

“She ate up well. She’s bright and looked in great nick so why not start her in the Slipper,” Hayes said.

“All of my Slipper horses are suddenly blossoming and hopefully they’ll be at their peak next Saturday.”

Lindsay Park lines up Tulip, Catchy, Formality and Madeenaty – with the latter looking to rebound after suffering a shock defeat at Flemington at the hands of stablemate Ploverset.

“She’s much, much better than that. I’ve got to say I was staggered when she went under the other day,” Hayes said.

“I think she seems happier at home so what I’ll do is put her on the float Thursday night for Sydney as we’re only six hours away and then that way she’s only got to be there for 48 hours.”

Punters will be more concerned about the status of Catchy, which has yet to suffer defeat and the bookmakers are offering a great price.

It’s currently +700 with Sportsbet.com.au for the Golden Slipper and considering the Blue Diamond form has already proven its quality in Sydney, that’s a stunning price for an adaptable type.

Current favourite Houtzen is also unbeaten and looked extra special when winning with a big weight at Brisbane last start. Trainer Toby Edmonds said earlier this year that he’s never trained a horse so quick.

“She’s the quickest horse I’ve trained, she’s very fast,” Edmonds said. “And she’s a great barrier horse.

“We bought the filly ourselves and it’s a dream come true.”

“I always knew she had good ability, but we weren’t quite sure how good because we hadn’t got underneath her at all until race day. She’s continued to improve with experience.”
