Yesterday’s Songs to resume in Testa Rossa

Mike Moroney knows Yesterday’s Songs has Group-class ability but says the gelding has been held back by feet issues.

Yesterday’s Songs is ready to resume in Saturday’s Listed Testa Rossa Stakes at Caulfield and Moroney is hoping the talented gelding can show his best this spring.

The six-year-old won the Wangoom Handicap in heavy ground at Warrnambool in May but Moroney had to pull the pin on the rest of his campaign after the gelding failed in the Echuca Cup at his next start.

“He’s had major feet problems, that’s why we had to stop and get them right. We’ve got them as well as we can,” Moroney said.

“We sent him down to Werribee for x-rays and they’ve got a special blacksmith who comes in once a month and does a few of the horses that have got feet problems.

“He makes up special shoes for them to work in, elevates them up to get their angles right.

“He just had a bit of trouble. He had a pedal bone that was just on the wrong angle sitting too close to the ground and he was feeling his feet, basically wasn’t striding out properly.”

Moroney says the gelding’s demeanour has been good and he seems a happy horse leading into his spring return.

The trainer is happy with Yesterday’s Songs and confident he can make his presence felt if he runs to his best.

“He’s always looked like being Group material, and that’s probably why he hasn’t made it to where it looked like he was going to, because of his feet,” Moroney said.

“We’ve just helped him as much as we can.”

Yesterday’s Songs is at $17 for Saturday with Keen Array the $3.80 favourite.
