Yendall sends punters mad after poor ride at Morphettville

LOOK away now if you backed $1.70 favourite Yulong Yongxing in the third race at Morphettville.

Victorian veteran jockey Dean Yendall has multiple group wins across a sparkling career, but the senior hoop had a race to forget aboard the Darren Weir-trained Yulong Yongxing, which was odds on to make it three wins from five starts.

The three-year-old left the gates well enough, but Yendall struggled to control the colt in the early stages as it raced into third, all the while throwing its head about.

Throughout multiple stages in the race Yulong Yongxing could have been taken to the outside to present a challenge in a six-horse field, but Yendall elected to keep it midfield and was eventually pocketed in.

The jockey punted on a path through opening up for the horse, but that never materialised. The horse was unbelievably snookered in a small field, a fact which drew punters’ ire from around the country.

Eventually Yendall got the horse to the outside and straightened it up when it was all too late. Yulong Yongxing finished fourth behind winner Arizona Wildcat, which returned $6.60 at Sportsbet.com.au, French Rock ($2.80 via WilliamHill.com.au) and Arleigh.

It is the first time the I Am Invincible progeny finished outside the placings, and on the back of that ride we suspect Darren Weir is putting a line through Dean Yendall’s name for the rest of the horse’s career.
