Winter Cup betting tips & trifecta picks – Saturday, 13 June 2020

Wu Gok racing news
After a dominant win in the Lord Mayor’s Cup, Wu Gok will start as favourite for the Winter Cup at Rosehill this Saturday.

The Listed TAB Winter Cup over 2400m is Rosehill’s feature race on Saturday despite just eight runners set to face the starter. Chris Waller has five runners, all of which fill the top five lines of betting. Race favourite Wu Gok maps to lead from barrier three in a bid to do the Lord Mayor’s Cup/Winter Cup double. The race sits fourth on the program and is set to jump at 1:10pm AEST.

Best Bet
Wu Gok @ $2.60

Wu Gok is a deadset mudlark, winning seven from 12 on a heavy track, and will get his favoured conditions here. The Sebring gelding was dominant in the Lord Mayor’s Cup a fortnight ago when he careered away to win by nearly four lengths. While we aren’t going to get the $26 like last start – in fact we will only be getting a tenth of that – he still looks to be the clear top pick. Adam Hyeronimus will partner the 6yo again and likely land in front and control the race from the soft draw. The slight concern here is the swing in the weights, as Wu Gok meets main market rivals Yulong Prince and The Lord Mayor 3.5kg worse off. He looks the obvious pick and should be hard to hold out.

Next Best
The Lord Mayor @ $3.90

The market looks to have this one spot on, with second elect The Lord Mayor the obvious danger to Wu Gok. He worked home from the end of the field to finish third in the aptly named Lord Mayor’s Cup and will definitely appreciate both the wet track and the rise to 2400m. He got a long way back last start in the field of 12, which probably lost the race for him in the end, with Tommy Berry giving him too much to do. Hugh Bowman jumps on and should not be that far away from gate five. The weight swing he gets on stablemate Wu Gok could be vital in the concluding stages. A definite winning chance and should get all the favours in the run.

Best Value
Sweet Thomas @ $21

The Matthew Smith-trained Sweet Thomas has had a somewhat unusual campaign which began back in February, when he ran into fourth from the back of the field at any old price. That had us keep a close eye on him for the rest of the autumn. He failed to fire a shot in his next two runs before getting onto a very heavy track and running fourth in the Group 1 Sydney Cup. Smith then gave him a month freshen up into the 2000m Gosford Cup, where he finished last, and the gelding now comes into this run off another month break and an 1100m trial a fortnight ago where he worked well. He gets his Heavy 9 track here and the 2400m will suit him much better, especially if he isn’t too far away. Kerrin McEvoy will likely settle last and be finishing well late. Looks a great each-way bet as long as no runners are scratched and we get a third-place dividend.
