Williams wins 5th jockeys’ premiership

Craig Williams has secured his fifth Melbourne jockeys’ premiership.

Williams has been in a battle with Dwayne Dunn for this year’s title and established an unassailable lead at the final city meeting of the season on Saturday at Caulfield.

Williams took a three-win lead into the meeting and Hursley’s victory in the fifth race put Williams four ahead of Dunn with only four races remaining.

Dunn won the next race on Andrassy to keep the slim prospect of a tie alive for another 40 minutes, but in the next race Dunn finished second on Fast `N’ Rocking in the Bletchingly Stakes.

“It’s a relief,” Williams said after his win on Hursley clinched him a fifth title.

Williams said when he decided against a riding stint in Japan this season and he was in contention for the Melbourne premiership after the autumn, it became a focus.

“I’ve been very lucky. The only reason I’m in front is that I’ve had great support and all the horses have been really well prepared,” Williams said.

“I’m very fortunate a lot of owners and trainers really supported this Championship race between Dwayne and I, and Dwayne just rode that well throughout the whole year, he just made me go to another level. So it was great competition.”

Williams won four-straight premierships between 2005/06 and 2008/09, sharing the 2008/09 title with Damien Oliver.
