To put the record straight, the 2000 Melbourne Cup winner was Kiwi horse Brew trained by NZ trainer Michael Moroney. Brew was the second last horse to complete the Hotham Stakes (now called the Archer Stakes) – Melbourne Cup double, Shocking the only other horse to complete the winning double (in 2009).
The winner of the Archer Stakes is guaranteed a start in the Melbourne Cup, as long as they are still in the 2024 Melbourne Cup Order of Entry.
