ARCHIE Alexander-trained Wheal Leisure looks set for the Tasmanian Oaks after a strong performance in the third race at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

The three-year-old filly was second up and had to do it the hard way but kicked away in the final 200m to record a strong win and return $5 at Sportsbet.com.au.

Prescott ran on well and came up alongside the leader but could not close to finish second and return $3 at Sportbet.com.au while Blue Ocean stayed on well to give investors $2.40 at Crownbet.com.au.

Jockey Michael Dee said there is plenty of improvement in the filly to come yet.

“She’s a really nice horse,” Dee said.

“I was confident if we’d get the right run she’d come out on top.”

“She was a little green in the run, still I reckon she has a bit of improvement in her to come.”

The filly looked a class above the field despite the hard run in the journey to secure the win and the three-year-old’s trainer said the horse is set for bigger and better things.

“We’ve always liked her,” trainer Archie Alexander said.

“We knew we had to give her time and she’d come good… great to get a good result.”

Depending on the next result for the race the horse could run in the listed Tasmanian Oaks, but there are higher ambitions for the prodigious filly.

“Whether we go straight to Tassie Oaks or put one in between it we’ll see but that’s been the plan, and then obviously you’re dreaming but if she won the Tassie Oaks then maybe a South Australian Oaks or an AJC Oaks or something like that.”
