What the jockeys said after the Cox Plate

COX PLATE JOCKEYS’ COMMENTS

Hugh Bowman (Winx) 1st : “I’m just so proud of the horse. I can’t believe it, I really thought in the build-up to this that I’d get quite emotional. I am feeling emotional but the electricity that came through my body turning into the home straight just then was something I didn’t just get to feel, but hopefully everybody else watching. I’m lost for words. Everybody watching her gets so much pleasure from her, out of her superb ability. The fact she’s been able to do so many times consecutively just speaks volumes of the management of her.”

Oisin Murphy (Benbatl) 2nd : “It was a big run. We met a champion in Winx and she was very impressive today. Full credit to her team.”

Damian Lane (Humidor) 3rd : “He was terrific. Obviously we followed her (Winx) the whole way and down the side when she quickened around them, I couldn’t go with her. He was brave into third (place), he tried hard.”

Glyn Schofield (Avilius) 4th : “He ran super. I came round the corner with a bit of horse under me and he gave me a really good kick. I couldn’t be happier with my horse.”

Ryan Moore (Rostropovich) 5th : “He’s run a nice race but he had to do a lot of hard work. The mare’s a champion, it was nice to see her.”

Kerrin McEvoy (D’Argento) 6th : “We got into a nice rhythm but it was just a case of him not using his stride efficiently around Moonee Valley that ended up bringing him undone.”

Chris Johnson (Savvy Coup) 7th : “They got her off the bit at the 400 (metres) and she was just sort of one-paced from there.”

John Allen (Kings Will Dream) Did not finish : “It felt just when he left the gates .. it was as if he hit a nerve or something because his action was bad for a few strides and then he came good. Once I turned the corner, it was like he hit a nerve again and his action just went to bits so we pulled him up.”
