Weir working on Magic Millions numbers

Just how many runners Darren Weir will have at the rich Magic Millions race day is still to be decided.

Lucky Hussler will return to defend his crown in the Magic Millions Cup on January 14, one of two races Victoria’s premier trainer won at this year’s carnival.

Mahuta won the Magic Millions Guineas and Weir had exciting three-year-old Speedeor set for the 1400m race next month, but the colt has been sent to the paddock because of shin soreness.

“He’s had a lot of troubles with his shins and unfortunately they’ve really played up now,” Weir said.

“We’ll give him a good spell and he’ll come back better again.

“It’s disappointing but the horse has had a great prep but they come to end at some stage.

“A break is the best thing for the horse and it’s just unfortunate it’s now with that race for that money.”

Weir says Speedeor will miss the autumn and be back for a spring campaign.

Lucky Hussler has been entered for the Standish Handicap at Flemington on Sunday with Weir undecided if he will run.

The seven-year-old was fresh going into last year’s 1400m Magic Millions race but Weir said the gelding was burly in condition when he inspected him last week.

“The Standish is an option for him but he’s probably better fresh,” Weir said.

“He’s big and burly so he needs a couple of hit-outs.

“It’s always been the plan to go up there again but looking at him during the week I thought he might need a run.”

Kenjorwood is likely to be freshened and join Lucky Hussler in the Magic Millions Cup after his victory in the Lord Stakes at Caulfield on Monday while stayer High Church could also contest the race.

But first the imported High Church needs to win the Shoot Out Quality (2200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

The winner of the race can earn a wildcard entry to the Millions..

“It’s a great incentive for these types of horses,” Weir said.

“If you’re Inglis or New Zealand Bloodstock you can’t go in but if you’re bought overseas you can win your way in.

“He might not be good enough but he’s not going to get too many opportunities to be racing for one million dollars.”
