Weir undecided as Raw Impulse wins again

Options remain open for Raw Impulse after he maintained his unbeaten Australian record with another easy win at Caulfield.

Raw Impulse toyed with his opposition in winning the Racing Photos Handicap on Saturday, his third straight victory since joining leading trainer Darren Weir.

Backed from $1.35 into $1.26, Raw Impulse accounted for Golden Mane ($16) by 2-3/4 lengths with Spur On Gold ($17) a long neck away third.

Raw Impulse is nominated for next week’s Group One Doomben Cup and while not ruling out a start Weir said it was unlikely Raw Impulse would be running.

Weir said a trip to Brisbane was being considered while the Listed WJ McKell Cup at Randwick on May 28 was also a possibility.

“We’ll get him home now, get him down the beach and see how he is,” Weir said.

“He needs to take on some better opposition at some stage to see where he fits in.

“He’s had a beautiful preparation for taking on a better race.”

If the decision is made not to travel interstate and give the son of Makfi a break, Weir said the four-year-old would remain in light training.

“I’m not that keen on spelling these (entires), they get too heavy,” Weir said.

“He may go and swim behind the boat or wade in the water or go to a water walker somewhere for two or three weeks and then resume his campaign.

“Whatever we decide, he won’t be getting a spell.”

As Raw Impulse races through his grades, Weir made comparisons with another imported galloper Puissance De Lune, the early favourite for the 2013 Melbourne Cup.

“We took our time with him,” Weir said.

“Some can get there and some can get a bit higher but this horse (Raw Impulse) looks a progressive type so far.”
