Weir poised to notch 400th win for season

Victorian horse trainer Darren Weir

A winning double at Sandown has Darren Weir on the verge of a history-making 400 winners in a season.

The premier Victorian trainer’s nationwide total moved to 399 with the wins of Penryn Pearl and Yogi on Wednesday.

The stable’s 400th winner could be brought up on Weir’s home track at Ballarat on Thursday.

Last season Weir passed John Hawkes’ previous record of 334 when he finished the 2015/16 season on 348.

This season’s tally includes eight Group One wins and a record 120 Victorian metropolitan winners with six weeks remaining.

The Melbourne jockeys’ premiership remains a tight battle between reigning premier Craig Williams and apprentice Beau Mertens.

Williams drew level with a double at Sandown and both head to Moonee Valley on Saturday with strong books of rides.
