Weir in sight of magical 300 season wins

After falling just short of training 300 winners last season Victorian trainer Darren Weir is expected to reach the milestone in coming days.

Weir has trained 296-1/2 winners Australia-wide in the first 10 months of the 2015-16 season after three winners and a dead-heat at Bendigo on Thursday.

The Ballarat-based Weir, who credits a satellite stable at the seaside town of Warrnambool for much of his success, ended 2014-15 with 298 winners, a personal record.

Weir has three runners at Geelong on Friday and has runners in three states on Saturday.

He has three runners at the re-opening of the Eagle Farm racecourse in Brisbane and two at Morphettville in Adelaide.

Closer to home his biggest representation is at Sandown where he has 10 runners listed over eight of the nine races.

He has seven another seven on Sunday with six at Warrnambool and one at Pakenham.

Weir has the best part of two months to chase down the Commonwealth record of 334 set by John Hawkes in 2002-03.
