Waller wins the Fast & Furious with Foxplay

SATURDAY didn’t start well for Chris Waller with the scratching of champion mare Winx, but it got a whole lot better when Foxplay won the Group 2 Fast & Furious Stakes at Randwick.

The three-year-old by Foxwedge was given a good ride by Hugh Bowman who sat just off the pace and produced the filly in the straight.

Bacarella ($18) established a clear break on the field, but Foxplay dashed late to score in a time of 1:12.58 with the well-tried favourite Global Glamour finishing off well for third.

Waller was pleased to score the win on an otherwise frustrating day and indicated that the three-year-old fillies might have the wood on the colts this season.

“Gun ride from Hugh (Bowman) there. To reel in the winner I thought it was a big effort,” Waller said.

“Maybe the three-year-old fillies are better than the colts.

“It always helps when you’ve got good chances and if you’ve got a bit of depth in your stable so I guess it would have a small impact.

“One of the questions we would have to ask is will Omei Sword beat Foxplay?”

Foxplay was last seen running second behind Awoke at Rosehill in July where it carried 58kg and the two-month lay-off between runs proved the winning tactic.

“She’s done everything right this filly. She got beaten in her last start during the winter but we picked this race out after only a 10-day break and she delivered,” Waller said.

“She’ll definitely go to the Tea Rose in two weeks time.”

Representing the large group of owners was Denise Martin who was over the moon with the win.

“It’s fabulous, I’m speechless,” Martin said. “She’s always been strong in her races. She was terrific and it was a perfect ride.”

Bacarella franked the form of Omei Sword in the Silver Shadow Stakes by running a gallant second placing. The Gary Moore-trained filly was a maiden winner at Canterbury in June and showed good pace to set them up in front.

The Waterhouse/Bott-trained Global Glamour looked the goods in a recent trial and was subsequently backed into $4.60 with Sportsbet.

The debut winner didn’t handle the Randwick bend, but once it straightened up it ran on impressively for third.
