Jockey Larry Cassidy will ride the John Wallace-trained two-year-old Cossie at Doomben.

Memories of one of his most exciting days will come flooding back for veteran trainer John Wallace when Larry Cassidy rides Cossie at Doomben.

Cossie will run in the Two-Year-Old Handicap (1050m) which will be the first race run with the new $70,000 prize money pool for Brisbane Saturday races.

Wallace has trained hundreds of winners starting with top sprinter Court Rush in the late 1960s.

He has won nearly 50 feature races since including the Australian Derby and Randwick Guineas with Shoot Out and five Group and Listed Cups with Oompala.

But he is also remembered for combining with Cassidy to finish third with Oompala in the 1994 Melbourne Cup.

Oompala had been ridden in most of his wins by Chris Munce who co-incidentally trains first starter Spirit of Cherokee in Saturday’s race.

But Cassidy got the Melbourne Cup ride and gave Wallace the thrill of his life when third behind Jeune.

These days Wallace has a small team on the Gold Coast and has high hopes for Cossie who is a daughter of under-rated sire Top Echelon.

“She won a Gold Coast trial and she kept coming when third at her first start over 900m at the Gold Coast,” Wallace said.

Apprentice Jackson Murphy rode Cossie at the Gold Coast but Wallace wanted a senior rider at Doomben.

“Larry has ridden plenty of winners of late so why not,” he said.
