Volkhere set to go one better: Heathcote

Veteran stayer Volkhere is poised to win the Toowoomba Cup after being runner-up last year.

Volkhere ran second to Gai Waterhouse’s weight-for-age star Pornichet in the 2015 Cup after looking the winner.

Pornichet won the Group One Doomben Cup at his next start and was competitive in the spring, running fourth in the Cox Plate.

Waterhouse ran Pornichet in the Cup when he missed a start in the Hollindale Cup because of unusual balloting laws.

The rules have since been changed to make certain better-performed horses make the field in stakes races.

Trainer Robert Heathcote believes Volkhere has had the right preparation to get his revenge in the Cup on Saturday.

“It was a freak set of circumstances last year. I mean how often do you get one of the best weight-for-age horses in Australia in a Toowoomba Cup,” Heathcote said.

“But it was good for the club and we get our chance this time.

Heathcote believes he has a bonus by being able to book leading jockey Jim Orman for Volkhere.

Orman, who outrode his allowance last week, is noted for his ability to ride the tricky Clifford Park circuit.

“Jim cut his teeth riding in Toowoomba and knows exactly what to do,” Heathcote said.
