Former West Australian sprinter Vega Magic has taken out the first Group One race of the Australian season with an all-the-way victory in the $1 million Memsie Stakes at Caulfield.

The five-year-old gelding, ridden by Craig Williams, took up the running in the 1400m weight-for-age race on Saturday and gave a strong kick in the straight to defeat last year’s winner Black Heart Bart by 1-3/4 lengths, with a short-half head to Tosen Stardom third.

Vega Magic won nine of his 14 starts when trained in the west and has since added three-straight victories since joining the Lindsay Park stable in Victoria earlier this year, including Group One wins in The Goodwood in Adelaide and the Memsie.
