Unequivocal on trial for Queensland trip

Stable star Famous Seamus has shown trainer Noel Mayfield-Smith he is ready for his upcoming Brisbane campaign with a barrier trial win at Hawkesbury.

And his stablemate Unequivocal can join him on the float trip to Queensland with a good performance at Rosehill on Saturday.

The mare beat Danish Twist at Kembla Grange on March 11 to earn her way into the Provincial Championship final but was not at her best on the soft Randwick track last Saturday week.

The $400,000 race was won by Danish Twist with Unequivocal midfield, four lengths from the Kris Lees-trained mare.

Unequivocal has been entered for a fillies and mare 1400m-benchmark race on Saturday but is more likely to run in the open 1350m-handicap.

“She won’t get as much weight in the open so that’s the most likely,” Mayfield-Smith said.

“She came through the Provincial Championship well and she could possibly join Famous Seamus in Brisbane.

“We’re feeling our way but I think a race like the Glenlogan Park Stakes would suit as long as the tracks are OK.”

At her second start as a two-year-old, Unequivocal beat subsequent Group One winners Delectation and Peggy Jean at Rosehill in February, 2014.

But a serious pastern injury which required surgery extended a scheduled spell to almost a year.

Like Unequivocal, Famous Seamus is at his best on firm surfaces.

He pleased his trainer with his 1000m-trial win at Hawkesbury on Monday and will follow a similar path to two years ago when he beat Spirit Of Boom and Buffering to win the Group One BTC Cup (1200m).

“He’ll start out in the Victory Stakes on Saturday week then go to the BTC Cup and the Doomben 10,000,” Mayfield-Smith said.

“But he won’t be going to the Stradbroke this time.”
