Unbiased stakes Queensland Derby claims

Godolphin has strengthened its late-season Classic bid as the John O’Shea-trained Unbiased underlined his Queensland Derby claims with an emphatic Canterbury win.

“If he ran well today, John always had it in his mind to send him to Brisbane,” Godolphin assistant trainer Darren Beadman said.

In all likelihood, Unbiased raced beyond Godolphin’s expectations as he posted a four-length win over stablemate Leider in Wednesday’s Cafe Culture + Insitu Handicap (1500m).

“Both his runs this time in have been positive so we can only hope for bigger things in the future,” Beadman said.

Sent out the $2.50 favourite, Unbiased was tucked away on the rail the second half of the field, but James McDonald was able to send the three-year-old forward at the 600m.

The colt took no time to join the leaders and he strolled clear for the easiest win of the day.

“He had a lap on this field and he won accordingly,” McDonald said.

As Unbiased heads north, stablemate and Victoria Derby runner-up Etymology will be sent to Adelaide to contest the South Australian Derby.

Etymology finished unplaced in the ATC Australian Derby earlier this month, but there was no indication the horse had trained off in his VRC St Leger second placing on Anzac Day.
