Udyta Clarke released from hospital after brain bleed| Punt Drunk

Punt Drunk Daily – 5/4/21

Morning punters and welcome to an Easter Monday edition of #PuntDrunk and what a weekend that was! Now, we sit back with a truckload of chocolate that we can dig into whilst loading up on the six horse racing meetings being held around the country. The Championships are only a handful of days away from kicking off on Saturday, and we will bring you everything you need to know in the lead up, as well as everything else we can keep our eye on throughout the week.

FINALLY, some good news

We ramble on about some of the negatives the racing world produces, but finally news came through that Udyta Clarke is out of hospital. The 73-year-old has spent the best part of four months in a hospital/rehab bed after suffering a life-threatening bleed on the brain. Amazingly, the popular trainer has not ruled out a return to the training ranks, and it is safe to say if she does return and trains a winner it will be one hell of a celebration. We are right behind you Udyta, and we’ll be raising a glass from the top shelf for you later today.

We need to pace ourselves chaps

How is this for some star power for Day 1 of The Championships? Mo’unga, Kolding, Mugatoo, Colette, Avilius, Aegon, Nature Strip, Bivouac, Masked Crusader, Eduardo, September Run, Rocket Spade, Lion’s Roar, Montefillia, Anamoe and Lightsaber. This could be up there as the best edition of The Championships and that is the potential starters on the nine race card at Randwick. Now the big issue is not blowing our stack before we get there! We know how tempting it is to unload on a Monday afternoon on the punt, or even at Tamworth tomorrow afternoon! A call for patience is required. If every race is like this year’s Chipping Norton we will certainly not complain!!

Not for sale!

The equal favourite in early all-in markets for the Stradbroke Handicap is Ayrton, an $11 chance according to the online bookmaker for the unbeaten Mick Price-trained gelding. Mick Price clearly has a high opinion of the 71 rater who looks set for a big winter campaign up north, before a crack at some nice races during the Melbourne spring. Price has given strict instructions to connections ‘Ignore all offers’!! Without a doubt Hong Kong has come knocking, but with a bit of luck this will be one future star who stays on our shores!

Punt Drunk’s best bet of the day

We know we asked for patience earlier on, but boy is it hard not to move the chips in for Excellaration in the last at Sandown today. His win on the Lakeside track a fortnight ago was breathtaking when rounding his rivals up easily and then putting a space on them with ease. Expect him to give his rivals a start, but we trust Billy Egan to have him savaging the line and be too good for this lot.
