Stradbroke runner-up Tyzone will trial at the Gold Coast ahead of a Melbourne spring campaign.

Queensland Horse of The Year contender Tyzone is ready to take his first steps towards a Melbourne campaign when he runs in a Gold Coast barrier trial.

Tyzone has been one of the most consistent horses in Queensland, winning 16 of his 32 starts for more than $900,000 prize money.

He confirmed his ability when second in the Group One Stradbroke Handicap behind Trekking at his last start.

Tyzone is one of the favourites for the Horse Of The Year Award in a fortnight along with Queensland Oaks winner Winning Ways and sprinter Zoustyle.

The gelding has gone from being considered a smart country horse who made the grade in Brisbane Saturday class to a genuine Group One horse.

Tyzone is also a clear favourite to win the 4YO and over trophy at the awards.

Co-trainer Toby Edmonds said Tyzone would trial at the Gold Coast on Tuesday, his first step to a southern campaign.

“He has shown he is up to top company and at this stage we are looking at Melbourne,” Edmonds said.

Tyzone is likely to resume in the Gilgai Stakes at Flemington on October 5.

“After that there are plenty of races for him especially if he handles the straight at Flemington,” Edmonds said.

Edmonds, who is now in partnership with his son Trent, will also trial Winter Bride who is headed for another southern campaign.

Winter Bride won two Group Three races in Melbourne last spring, beating subsequent Oakleigh Plate winner Booker in one.

“She also won a stakes race in Sydney in the autumn and was stakes placed in the winter. Winter Bride will chase similar races again,” Edmonds said.
