Tyler excited about group prospects for Hayley Maree

Kelvin Tyler is looking forward to upcoming racing season and the group one challenges that are in line for talented mare Hayley Maree.

It has not been smooth sailing for the Riverton trainer however, who has overcome several setbacks with the gifted galloper.

The seven-year-old endured a ligament problem, then underwent surgery to remove bone chips, but Tyler now believes the horse is at the peak of her powers.

“I’m really happy with her,” he said.

“She’s better now than she has been for the last two years.”

Hayley Maree returned from a lengthy injury break to finish runner-up over 1200m at Timaru, and the trainer is not worried about the mare stepping up in distance on Saturday in the Group Three Winter Cup at Riccarton.

The trainer, who won the Winter Cup in 2015 with Timy Tyler, is confident the seven-year-old will handle the mile.

“I’ve got no concerns, she’s a pretty clean-winded mare and she’s been in work since January,” said Tyler, who won the Cup in 2015 with Timy Tyler.

“She’s done a lot of miles.”

The winner of five of her 15 starts, Hayley Maree ran fourth in the Group One Captain Cook Stakes behind Julinsky Prince in 2015 and, safely through Riccarton, she will head to Hastings.

The mare currently holds nominations for both the Group One Windsor Park Plate and the Group One Livamol Classic.

The trainer said Hayley’s Maree’s comeback performances will dictate whether the team takes on group glory, but admitted he believes the horse is capable of taking out both races at peak fitness.

“If she runs well we’ll go up there and have a crack,” Tyler said.
