Punters endured a bloodbath throughout the weekend of racing after a number of the “sure thing” bets of the day went down in spectacular fashion.

First it was Menari that put in a shocking performance in the Golden Rose which was meant to be a moral, then it was distinct outsider Harlem winning like Winx at huge odds to earn a place in the Caulfield Cup.

Time to pick up the pieces and hopefully have a laugh at what was a nightmare weekend on the punt.

It was Ryan’s Rose, but not as we expected

The in-form sprinter Menari was the horse to beat heading into Saturday’s Golden Rose at Rosehill, but it was another Gerald Ryan runner which took home the trophy in dramatic circumstances.

While it was a surprise to most that Trapeze Artist took out the feature race of the day, the trainer did warn punters early on that the horse is more than capable of saluting.

Unfortunately most punters did their cash in on Menari and were in no mood to be celebrating the Ryan win.

Many made reference to Darren Flindell’s “Menari the Ferrari” comment following the disappointing third-placed finish as a short-priced favourite.

While one punter mused on whether or not the stable might have made a mix up heading into the group one race.

Clutching at straws my friend.

There were a few lucky people that got to revel in the win however.

Harlem brings the heat to earn a Cup start

All the big guns lined up in Melbourne on Saturday for a chance return in just over a month’s time for the Group One Caulfield Cup, but it was a double figure elect that got the nod in the MRC Foundation Cup.

The manner in which Harlem won was noted by punters, who now think the horse is a sneaky chance for one of the primary group ones of the Melbourne Spring Carnival.

Harlem, which was handed a .5kg penalty for this year’s Caulfield Cup, is a $13 hope in this year’s edition of the race.

Not only did Harlem earn itself a spot in the Caulfield Cup, but the horse also delivered a huge dividend for charity.

Connections get a shot at group glory and a charity gets some cash – is there a better way for a racing meet to end?
