CHAMPION Victorian trainer Darren Weir believes Humidor is in the best possible shape going into the Melbourne Cup but admitted the 3200m distance will be an unknown heading into Tuesday.

The Makybe Diva Stakes winner ran a disappointing fifth in the Caulfield Cup after entering the race as a key elect, but bounced back in spectacular fashion to almost upset Winx’s coronation in the Cox Plate a week ago.

The five-year-old gelding has never raced beyond the 2400m mark in its 21 race career, and Weir admitted that is the biggest query sorrounding Humidor heading into its maiden Melbourne Cup.

“He’s coming in really well,” Weir told HorseBetting.com.au.

“He recovered well from the Cox Plate run, now we’re just waiting on the barrier draw but the trip is a worry.

“We’re happy with him though, but the trip is a worry.”

Humidor is a $9 chance at Neds to win the 2017 Melbourne Cup.

When pressed if he thinks Humidor will see out the trip, Weir was reluctant to rubberstamp the horse’s staying prowess.

“I don’t know really, I really don’t know.

“Ideally he sees it out, he comes in well and the Cox Plate run was big, but its a wait and see.

“If we draw a barrier that’ll help a bit but that’s something you can’t control.”

The market went slightly cold on the son of Teofilo after the Caulfield Cup run, but the Cox Plate second placing saw Humidor shoot straight back up towards the top of the market following the half length defeat to Winx.

Weir said it was a tremendous run that boosts the confidence of the stable that the Melbourne Cup could be within its sights.

“It was a really good run,” the trainer said.

“I wasn’t sure he had enough to run down the winner, but he’s coming in well here and that’s all that matters.

“The trip is the worry, but we’ll wait and see.”
