Trap For Fools up for bigger race options

Trainer Jarrod McLean will discuss options with connections of Trap For Fools after the former Perth galloper recorded back-to-back wins at Moonee Valley.

After victory at Moonee Valley on August 25, Trap For Fools went on to record an all-the-way win in Saturday’s Harrolds Handicap.

Ridden by Brad Rawiller, Trap For Fools was sent off the $4.40 favourite in defeating Yogi ($8) by a length with Bondeiger ($31) the same margin away third.

McLean has had Trap For Fools for five runs after the gelding started his career in Perth with Lindsey Smith.

With Trap For Fools holding nominations for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, McLean will consult owner Geoff Evans in the next 24 hours on which direction to take.

Options include the Naturalism Stakes at Caulfield, a return to Moonee Valley for the JRA Cup or a trip to Sydney for The Metropolitan at Randwick.

“It’s tempting to come back here for the JRA Cup but the Naturalism is a free hit into the Caulfield Cup,” McLean said.

“And The Metropolitan could also be hard to pass up. It’s a Group One and worth $1 million.”

McLean doesn’t see the 2400m, should Trap For Fools be set on a Caulfield Cup path, being a problem despite him being unplaced twice at the trip.

“In one of them it was in the Perth Cup and Lindsey knew he was in trouble a week out,” McLean said.

“I think he’ll stay a mile and a half, hopefully further.”
