Raymond Connors’ jumping season is away to the perfect start.

He produced last winter’s Great Northern Steeplechase (6400m) winner Wise Men Say and Max to successfully open their campaigns at Wanganui on Sunday and completed a winning treble when Go To Man claimed the Rating 65 mile.

“It’s great to get a few winners and Max will start in the Waikato Steeples next,” Connors said.

The Gallant Guru gelding provided an unexpected result when he triumphed in the restricted open steeplechase over 3800m in his first start for eight months.

“He was the one that surprised me, I definitely thought he would need a run,” Connors said.

Max has been ridden in all three of his wins over the big fences by Isaac Lupton, who was also aboard Wise Men Say in Sunday’s maiden hurdle (3000m).

The Yamanin Vital eight-year-old was making his first appearance since he beat Upper Cut in the Great Northern last September.

“He’s been in work for a fair while and I’ll probably wait until Queen’s Birthday with him and go to the McGregor Grant Steeples,” Connors said.

“We’ll have to place him as best we can, weight might become an issue.”

Meanwhile, Go To Man is fashioning a tidy flat record with the son of Shocking the winner of three of his 15 starts.

“He’s got plenty of ability and the rain helped him,” Connors said. “He feels the ground and jars up, hopefully he can pick up a nice race this time in.”
