Trainer planning WFA tilt with Adirondack
Trainer Shawn Mathrick is looking to raise the bar with Adirondack following his recent Caulfield win.
The former Godolphin galloper landed a sizeable betting plunge when successful at Caulfield on April 16 and Mathrick is now eyeing a trip to the Gold Coast.
The Cranbourne trainer is considering the Group Two Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on May 7 although he acknowledges it will be a massive rise in grade from the five-year-old’s win in the VOBIS Gold Heath (2000m) on April 16.
“I’m not sure how deep the field will be and if it ends up a little bit shallow I’ll go, otherwise we’ll just hang around here and have another run or two,” Mathrick said.
Adirondack’s latest win was his fourth from eight starts for Mathrick and the trainer believes there are more to come.
The gelding has already proven to be a top money spinner for his new connections, earning almost $235,000 since joining Mathrick, including almost $160,000 from his win at Caulfield.
“He didn’t leave an oat after Caulfield,” Mathrick said.
“He’s just a warhorse, amazing.
“We’ve moved to a new farm and the horses are just loving it.
“We’re not far from the Cranbourne track but it’s like it’s bush land when they look around and I think they really enjoy it.”
If Adirondack doesn’t make the trip north for the Hollindale Cup, Mathrick has interstate travel plans for the gelding further down the track.
He said a working holiday to the Darwin Cup in August was appealing.
Mathrick has travelled Adirondack interstate previously with the gelding successful in Adelaide early last month.
