Track rider Riharna Thomson dies

Trackwork rider Riharna Thomson has died from injuries she received in an accident at Canberra’s Thoroughbred Park.

The Canberra Racing Club said the 22-year-old Thomson, who had been on life support since the incident on Tuesday, had died on Friday morning.

The club said Thomson, who was recently promoted to the position of stable foreman of the Keith Dryden-Scott Collings training partnership, was loved and well-respected in the local racing community.

A ceremony to honour Thomson will be held at Thoroughbred Park before the first race on Sunday’s annual showcase Black Opal Stakes meeting.

CRC employees and stable staff are receiving support and have been offered counselling services with the assistance of local pastor Steven Prior and Racing NSW chaplain Colin Watts and through the Racing NSW Racing Mates Assistance Program.

Arrangements are being made for Thomson’s funeral to be held in Tamworth.
