DARREN Weir-trained six-year-old Tosen Stardom has been scratched from Saturday’s Group One Doncaster Mile after the it was decided conditions would not suit the Japanese import.

Tosen Stardom – which was a +1600 chance at Sportsbet.com.au in the all-in market – drew a wide alley for the $3 million race, which helped make the decision to scratch the horse even easier.

Australian Bloodstock’s Jamie Lovett said the team was not prepared to risk the horse on a heavy track – conditions it has never raced in before – alongside a difficult barrier to overcome.

“Gate 23 – it just makes it too hard,” Lovett said.

“We’re really keen to win a good race with this horse, we think a bit of him.

“We’d be happy to wait as opposed to being four, five-wide on a Heavy 10; I just don’t think that’s the best thing for the horse.”

The team is now eyeing off running Tosen Stardom in the Group One All Aged Stakes on April 15.

Darren Weir is now has the solitary runner in the Doncaster Mile, Blamey Stakes winner Palentino.

The former group one winning runner is set to put in a good performance as a $10 shot at Crownbet.com.au if the trainer’s confidence is anything to go on.

“There is no doubt Flemington is his go. The mile there he loves,” Weir told Melbourne radio station RSN.

“He went too bad at Sydney so I reckon we can forget that one hopefully. Everything went wrong and I think he just went too bad so we are putting that behind us.”

“He has drawn a lot better, I reckon the give in the ground is a plus.’

“I have no excuses from our end, a very fit horse, had a trial over a 1000m the reverse way of going at Terang on Tuesday and went very well.”

“He got up there last night in good shape so there is no excuses from our end.”
