Top weekend horse racing tips at Doomben and Scone

Weekend tips

THE Brisbane winter carnival kicks off this Saturday with the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 where there is some great racing action in store for punters.

The eight-race card at Doomben features some great betting fields, including the Group 2 Champagne Classic where the talented two-year-olds will do battle for the prize.

Scone also hosts a premier card which is headlined by the $400,000 Inglis 3YO Guineas and the Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic.

We have found our best five tips for racing at Doomben and Scone which are all set to give punters a great sight.

One of our best bets comes in the Doomben 10,000 and punters can get enhanced odds for every runner by signing up to Ladbrokes.com.au.

Ladbrokes.com.au

Interlocuter – Scone Race 1

We’re kicking off our top five tips with talented import Interlocuter, which scored a mightily impressive win last start and it has plenty of improvement to come.

The Darren Beadman-trained French import finished second at Newcastle in its Australian debut before easily handling an inferior field at Wyong last start where it won by over seven lengths.

The four-year-old has been patiently handled throughout its short career and it has a good enough turn-of-foot to suggest it will continue winning.

Stepping up over more ground is only going to help its cause and it’s drawn to get a saloon passage from barrier four with Tye Angland in the saddle.

The only other dangers in the field are fellow imports Richard of Yorke and Great Glen, but it should have them covered and the $3 at WilliamHill.com.au won’t last long.

Snitzkraft – Doomben Race 4

Punters have every right to be cautious when backing Snitzkraft after it showed very little last start, but it needed the run and it should strip much fitter for this.

The talented two-year-old could rebound in style here and based on its two prior performances we wouldn’t be ruling out a big win. It won by over eight lengths when breaking maiden grades three back on this track and it followed that up with a stylish win at the Sunshine Coast.

It scored by 2.3 lengths over a nice field on that occasion and despite being beaten as the $2 favourite last start, punters are getting better value here at $3.20 with Sportsbet.com.au.

It has good gate speed, but from barrier nine we’re expecting jockey Luke Dittman to sit just behind the speed before pulling out and making its run in the straight.

Clearly Innocent – Scone Race 6

It’s tough to go past a horse which is unbeaten on the track and Clearly Innocent looks one of the better value bets of the day.

The Kris Lees-trained five-year-old has yet to taste defeat at Scone in five career starts and that’s an incredible record. It has also won and placed in three second-up runs and it won its only start at this distance.

The statistics read very well for the son of Not A Single Doubt, but bookmakers are reluctant to install it as the favourite, which currently belongs to Snoopy at $4.20.

Clearly Innocent is the second favourite at $4.80 with CrownBet.com.au and we think the change scenery will help turn its form around after two poor efforts. It finished last in the Chatham Stakes to end its last campaign and it opened its account this preparation with an unlucky ninth in the Hawkesbury Rush.

Punters shouldn’t read too much into that effort as it was caught wide and it finished only 2.5 lengths from the winner.

There is some risk in backing Clearly Innocent, but the price is right and punters could cash in.

Music Magnate – Doomben Race 7

Music Magnate was a classy winner at Eagle Farm in the Victory Stakes last start and it’s back to defend its 2016 Doomben 10,000 title.

The Bjorn Baker-trained five-year-old is all class and despite showing inconsistencies in its form, it has the ability to win back-to-back Doomben 10,000’s.

Its record now sits at eight wins from 17 starts and five placings, which stacks up nicely for this and the distance is ideal having won four from its seven starts over the 1200m.

The nicely-bred son of Written Tycoon handles all track conditions and having the in-form Jeff Lloyd in the saddle should help its chances.

This is a tough field to beat and the $6.50 is a fair price from bookmakers, but we’re going on the safer side and suggesting a place bet. The $2.30 at Ladbrokes.com.au for the place is a good bet and we’d be surprised to see it miss the placings.

Nieta – Scone Race 8

We would have preferred to see this mare run on a rain-affected track, but it still runs well on the dry and it looms as another good betting opportunity.

The John Thompson-trained four-year-old has made it a habit of winning, having won six of its 11 career starts, and it looks well-placed to win another.

Despite the majority of its form coming on wet tracks, it ran second behind Kuro on good ground two starts back and it drops right down in weight for this to 53kg with Tim Clark in the saddle.

It’s no secret that this will be its biggest test to date, but punters are confident that it will continue its winning run and we’d have to agree.

We wouldn’t want to take less than even money, but the $2 at Bet365.com is solid value and it should be featuring in many horse racing multi-bets this Saturday.
