Tommy Berry happy to be aboard English

English looks a good bet in The Shorts at Randwick on Saturday

TOMMY Berry has twice defeated English in group ones, but will happily sit aboard the Waterhouse/Bott-trained mare in the Group 2 The Shorts at Randwick on Saturday.

Berry was aboard Vancouver when it won the Golden Slipper and Chautauqua when it won the TJ Smith Stakes. English finished in behind Berry on both occasions, but it has since won the Group 1 All Aged Stakes and it looks one of the better bets at Randwick on Saturday.

Berry knows what it takes to beat English and the turn-of-foot the mare possesses.

“When she went in the TJ, I didn’t think I was going to get her until inside the 200-metres with Chautauqua. She goes quick when you ask her to go,” Berry said.

“With most horses it takes a couple of strides for them to let down – with her it’s instantaneous. It looks more explosive.”

Berry related the sprint of Chautauqua to English and gives English the edge over the short sprint which will likely come into play over the 1100m at Randwick.

“With English she doesn’t get over a lot of ground so it feels like you are going quicker. It is hard to explain why,” Berry said.

“He (Chautauqua) can hold a sprint for 600 metres whereas she goes for 300 or 400 metres, that is the difference in them.”

Berry rode English fresh up in the autumn where it flashed home between runners to win the Challenge Stakes which suggests another top fresh run should be expected.

“You saw how quickly she picked up that day and she beat some very good sprinters,” Berry said. “There is plenty of speed in the race on Saturday and it could be pretty similar.

“I should be able to get a good tow into the race and then she just has to see clear air to show that turn of foot.

“She has been very good in her trials and I expect to see a better sprinting mare this time.”

English opened at $2.60, but has been well-backed into $2.40 at Sportsbet which looks a great multi-bet inclusion this weekend.
