Thousands pack Randwick for Winx return

Thousands of people have turned up to watch Winx return to the racetrack and bring home her 10th consecutive win.

Randwick racecourse was decked out in her race colours of blue and white for the champion mare’s return in the Warwick Stakes.

She cruised to the finish line to win by 3-1/2 lengths, cementing her place as Australia’s best racehorse.

“She’s just the best. She is the bees knees,” part-owner Debbie Kepitis said amid cheers from the crowd.

Winx has been in work for three months to prepare for the spring.

“We’re just happy to have her back. She’s looking great for the future,” another part-owner Peter Tighe said.

Almost 10,000 punters, many dressed in a touch of blue, filled the stands at Randwick on what is a busy weekend for sport with the Bledisloe Cup on Saturday night and the Olympics coming to a close.

“As soon as we heard Winx was running we came out here,” racegoer Alan Stoneman told AAP.

“I’ve seen her on TV but I haven’t seen her up close before. It was just amazing.”

But the mighty mare wasn’t the only star on community race day.

A crowd of tiny tots gathered to see their green and yellow-spotted friend Dorothy the Dinosaur and favourite ice princesses perform on stage as others kicked footballs at the Sydney FC soccer clinic and aspiring riders saddled up for pony rides.
