Thelburg out to stretch Sadler’s run

Trainer John Sadler has spent countless hours getting into Thelburg’s head.

And although the three-year-old still has a way to go, Sadler hopes his talent shines through when he heads to Flemington on Saturday to run in the VRC Recognition Handicap over 1100 metres.

Victory would be Thelburg’s third in succession and a fourth straight win from Sadler’s past four starters.

Thelburg has always shown the Caulfield trainer above average ability but his manners have been a concern.

Sadler said Thelburg “completely lost the plot” when second on debut at Yarra Valley last December.

“Over a period of time we’ve got him going really well,” Sadler said.

“I don’t know how he’ll adapt to the straight but he’s got more talent than what he’s shown.

“He’s still putting it altogether and the best of him will be seen next prep.”

With further work Sadler believes Thelburg will be seen at his best in races over 1400 and 1600m.

In-form apprentice Ben Allen take the ride on Thelburg with a three-kilogram claim.

“The three kilograms off his back brings him in with 56 which is two above the minimum and I thought that looked better than the 59 he had,” Sadler said.

“If he can handle the straight well and race generously I’d be disappointed if he doesn’t weigh in.”

Flemington was hit with 10mm of rain on Thursday night and despite its renowned recuperative powers, Flemington assistant track manager Liam O’Keeffe expects the track to remain a soft 7.
