Back-to-back wins are not enough to convince trainer David Payne to continue The Mighty Fed’s debut campaign.

The Mighty Fed bowed out for the autumn after winning the Stratum Star Retires To Widden Handicap at Randwick on Saturday.

“Once he gets to the mile, that’s when you’ll see the best of him,” Payne said.

“He’s looks like a serious horse so we might have something for the spring.”

Settling second last in the six-horse field, The Mighty Fed ($7) was too strong for the favourite Debonairly ($2.35) in scoring by a half length.

Ruling out a Queensland winter carnival campaign, Payne said The Mighty Fed would be in the paddock next week.

“When I brought him back I gelded him so he’s had a bit of a rough time. Now he can relax,” Payne said.

Jockey Tim Clark was also impressed after The Mighty Fed swept to the lead wide on out on a track rated in the heavy range.

“He toughed it out well. When I gave him room I thought he quickened really nicely so he’s got a nice future ahead of him,” Clark said.
