Tango Rain eyes San Domenico Stakes

Tango Rain

THE Gerald Ryan-trained Tango Rain was heavily backed into $4.80 in the opening race at Canterbury on Saturday and it proved a good move for punters.

The smart two-year-old remained unbeaten when winning the Happy 70th Birthday Martin King Handicap and it now has the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes on its agenda.

There was talks about the son of Manhattan Rain contesting the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes later this year, but Ryan isn’t convinced it’s that type of horse just yet.

“He’s a great style of horse,” Ryan said.

“We’ve just got to try and make a stallion out of him.

“I’m not sure if he’s a Golden Rose horse. I’ve got a question mark about him the way he’s built, running out the 1400m.

“He’s in the Golden Rose but we’ll just play it by ear. There are plenty of other races for him.”

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy pushed the colt forward from the barriers and it found the lead easily as race-favourite Thronum ($3 at Sportsbet) missed the jump. Tango Rain travelled well throughout and gave a nice turn-of-foot when asked by McEvoy.

“Today we were able to get to the front just to offset the draw a bit,” McEvoy said.

“He was able to control the race from there.”

The San Domenico Stakes is held at Rosehill on August 13 and it will likely be the next target for Tango Rain. It was paying $51 for the Golden Rose earlier in the week, but it has been temporarily removed from the market.

Race-rivals Thronum ($26 at Sportsbet) and Hair Trigger ($21) look better betting opportunities for the Golden Rose.

Tommy Berry was questioned by steward Marc Van Gestel about his ride aboard Thronum. Berry told stewards he gave up his rails position to find better footing and his frustrations were made clear about being questioned.

“I intended riding him with cover because of the strong wind down the back,” Berry said.

“I felt the fence was softer when I walked the track this morning, so I intended to stay off if I could.”

Van Gestel wasn’t pleased with the response and continued to press Berry about his tactics.

“I’ve already answered that question,” Berry said.

“No you haven’t because I haven’t asked it yet,” Van Gestel replied.

“After we’d gone another 50m I wished I had taken the box-seat,” Berry finally conceded.
