Talented fillies break maidens at Wyong
Trainer Chris Waller has had a successful day at Wyong with three wins in the first six races.
Impulsive and Velocita have emerged from Chris Waller’s seemingly bottomless talent pool with eye-catching maiden victories at the ATC midweek meeting in Wyong.
The three-year-old fillies have been given scope to develop and that investment looks to be paying off for Sydney’s premier trainer as they won in contrasting fashion.
The John Camilleri-bred and owned Impulsive ($6.50) produced an all-the-way win in the Limitless Lodge Breaking In Plate (1350m), beating African Academy ($4.40) by 1-1/4 lengths.
“We’ve been a bit bullish about her in terms of her future,” Waller told Sky Thoroughbred Central.
“There’s a lot to work with. She’s what you aspire to when you’re breeding horses or training horses.”
Waller said the So You Think filly would now take a break to gear up for an autumn campaign.
While Impulsive set the tempo to control her race, Velocita relied on a withering burst to claim the Wyong Magic Millions December 21 Handicap (1600m).
Her third trip over the mile was telling as stablemate and $3.20 favourite Plagiarist – stepping up from 1400 metres for the first time – was nabbed by a long neck.
Velocita ($14) was last heading into the home straight and Blake Shinn timed his run to perfection out wide.
“Blake just bided his time. There was obviously plenty of pace there. It’s good to be good tracks and winning from anywhere despite it being a short straight,” Waller said.
“I’ve always thought a bit of her, she’s just taken a bit of time to show it.”
Shinn initially thought he might struggle to reel in Plagiarist.
“Wyong isn’t the longest straight and I felt the bird had flown, but she just had a great turn of foot. Once she got out she really sprouted wings,” he said.
Waller was upbeat about developing colt Plagiarist.
“I guess it just told on him the last 50 metres and he didn’t have one to chase,” he said.
“He’s still pretty docile at this stage but he’s got a very bright future.”
McEvoy nailed a double with Waller when Smooth Whiskey ($7) gradually reeled in Coys 10-length lead to pip the $3.70 favourite by a length in the Kooindah Waters Handicap (2100m).
