Bendigo Jockey Club is scheduled to host a nine-race card on Thursday afternoon, and HorseBetting.com.au’s Victorian form analyst brings you his best bets, top odds and free quaddie selections. The meeting is set to be run on a Soft 6 with the rail out 8m for the entire circuit, while racing is set to get underway at 12:30pm AEST at the ‘Nursery of Champions’.
Mick Price saddles up his three-year-old filly Journalese following a close second when first-up at Echuca on June 26. The daughter of Written Tycoon was a touch unlucky in being held up at a crucial time, but she made up plenty of ground out wide to only go down by the barest possible margin. She showed at Echuca that she can handle the sting out of the track, and with the long home straight that Bendigo possesses, she should be able to build through her gears and prove too hard to hold out under Jack Hill.

In the third leg of the quaddie, the Hanna Powell-trained Just Jake comes back to a track where he is yet to finish outside of the top three in six runs. With two wins and three runner-up performances at Bendigo, we anticipate the four-year-old Reward For Effort gelding will be hard to beat despite a below-average performance at Sandown on June 30. His win two starts back at Bendigo over the 1400m in similar company on June 20 showed some class, as he settled no better than four deep without cover the entire race and went on to win by two lengths. A similar effort on Thursday should see him build on his strong Bendigo record (6:2-3-1).
Race 8 – Just Jake (#1)[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1374525_08]
The Christopher Davis-trained Villianaire has been racing in tougher company than what he faces on Thursday and presents good value as he looks to make it two wins from his past four starts. His win three starts back at Echuca was impressive when leading all the way, despite needing to get off the canvas to score. He seemingly does his best racing up on speed, and from barrier three Teo Nugent should have no issue in settling Villianaire on the pace and leading them home in the opening leg of the quaddie.

Midweek racing heads to Ballarat on Thursday, and HorseBetting’s Victorian racing analyst brings you his best bets, top odds and free quaddie numbers for the meeting. Given the persistent rain across the state this week, the decision was made on Wednesday afternoon to switch the program from the turf track to the synthetic. The first of eight races is set to go at 1pm AEST.
The Tony McEvoy-trained Fighter returns off a five-month spel. The son of Lord Kanaloa has four runner-up performances to his name from five career starts, and he had been competing in tougher maidens during the summer than what he contests on Thursday. From barrier eight, look for Dean Holland to get Fighter settled midfield with a bit of cover. When asked for an effort, he has a turn of foot that looks too good for his rivals to match.
Race 1 – Fighter (#5)We were with the Hanna Powell-trained Just Jake when he resumed at Cranbourne on May 28 and finished second, defeated by two lengths on the line. Having settled midfield on the rails, he took a while to warm up, but when he did get going he savaged the line. He comes to Ballarat for the first time and doesn’t mind a bit of rain, while he should derive benefit from that first-up run and prove hard to beat in the opening leg of the quaddie.

Cranbourne Turf Club is set to host a nine-race card on Friday from 5pm AEST as the night racing season comes to an end for another year. The meeting is set to be run on a track rated a Soft 6, with the rail out 9m for the entire circuit. HorseBetting.com.au brings you the best bets, top odds and free quaddie selections for the evening.
We were keen on Fast ‘N’ Deep chances at Pakenham on May 20, but the Mark Sues-trained mare was scratched from that and ultimately saved for this on Friday night. She returns to the Cranbourne 1000m, where she was successful at her last start on April 30 after settling close to the speed. From barrier 10, she will need a little bit of luck early on, but if she can get to the rails, she is clearly the one to beat. Celine Gaudray’s 2kg claim gets Fast ‘N’ Deep in with just 57kg, and that should tip the scales in her favour.
Race 7 – Fast ‘N’ Deep (#4)[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1370477_07]
Greg Eurell and Jamie Mott team up with three-start maiden Visualising, who resumed over 1200m at Ballarat on May 9 when finishing second after hitting the lead 200m out from home. The three-year-old son of Dream Ahead steps up to the 1400m on Friday night for his second-up run and gets to a distance which looks to suit him perfectly. We expect Mott to use barrier one to his advantage and take the lead in a race that lacks early speed. If Visualising is afforded a quiet time of it out in front, he should be too good for this field.
Race 2 – Visualising (#8)[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1370477_02]
Hanna Powell saddles up her four-year-old gelding Just Jake for his first-up run this campaign, and he gets a race that suits him to the tee. Despite only winning once in seven attempts at 1200m, it is his superior wet-track form that sets him apart from his rivals. From seven runs on wet going, he has two wins and three minor placings to his name. Expect Matthew Cartwright to have him close to the speed throughout from barrier seven, and with a first-up win next to his name already, we expect him to be hard to beat at a price.
