Sydney Cup called off mid-race after Almoonqith incident
THE 2017 Sydney Cup has been called off mid-race after Almoonqith broke down only the rail in the straight.
This forced stewards to make the tough decision to call off the race just before the horses approached the Randwick home turn.
Some of the jockeys were aware of the situation, most notably Hugh Bowman who pulled up Libran quickly, but some were left thinking the race was still on.
The Charlie Appleby-trained Polarisation ended up winning the non-race, much to the dislike of jockey Corey Brown who was irate when steward’s alerted him of the situation.
Who Shot Thebarman was the other horse involved in the incident, but it galloped on riderless and seemingly unharmed.
The ATC stewards are looking at options as to whether the race will be re-run and all Sydney Cup bets have been refunded.
