Super Snob’s sights on the city after commanding win

TRAINER Peter Morgan believes there is improvement to come from promising filly Super Snob after a strong win in the Ovens Ford Wangaratta maiden on Tuesday.

Under a patient ride from star jockey Beau Mertens, the three-year-old found the front as the field entered the straight and was never troubled, returning $2.10 at Crownbet.com.au.

Equus D’oro battled on admirably to finish second and deliver $2.50 to WilliamHill.com.au clients while Magic Thor ($3.40 at Sportsbet.com.au) rounded out the placings.

It took all of Beau Mertens’ talent and savvy to get the horse into the clear after being slightly held up coming around the bend, but once the three-year-old found open air, Super Snob extended on its rivals to record a comfortable four-length win.

Despite the fact that Tuesday marked Super Snob’s first-ever victory, Morgan thinks the filly has the class to win in the metropolitan area.

“She’s been placed in the city mid-week and she’s a filly so there’s not much good in running her around the country,” Morgan told HorseBetting.com.au.

“So I reckon we’ll have another go mid-week with her.”

The trainer believes the break-through win could be the catalyst for bigger and better things for his filly, while also giving credit to star hoop Mertens in the process.

“She had it won a fair way out so it was just a better of Beau peeling her off the leader’s back, and good riders tend to be patient and do that, and that’s what Beau did.

“It was a good win for her, but she’s always run a place, so she might go on from here and win another race or two.”

Super Snob has been far from disgraced in the two mid-week meets Morgan alluded to, finishing in the first-four on both occasions behind smart runners Written Choice and unbeaten colt Merchant Navy, which is a $8.50 chance at Ladbrokes.com.au for Saturday’s Golden Rose at Rosehill.

While Morgan does not believe spring city glory awaits his elect this campaign, the trainer believes his filly can make its way back to mid-week city grade and win this preparation.

“The races get a bit tougher this time of year, the horses are a bit stronger,” the trainer joked.

“We can’t get ahead of ourselves this time of the year, but outside of the spring she’s a big chance (for weekend racing).”

The prospect of racing in the listed races may not be the most appealing prospect to Morgan, but the trainer refused to rule out Super Snob of weekend city racing if the right event presented itself.

“Who knows?” Morgan said.

“If there was a weak stakes race for the fillies we’d consider it, but I doubt that will come about at this time of the year.”
