THE form of the Tasmanian-based thoroughbreds has stood up well this season and Step The Pedal will look to continue the trend at Flemington.

The six-year-old mare runs in the Loddon Mallee Region Handicap and it’s looking to string its sixth consecutive win together, but the dry track isn’t ideal for the quality runner.

“We really wanted a wet track and you can see her form on the rain-affected ground,” trainer David Brunton said. “It’s not ideal, but we’re here and she has shown enough this time in to suggest she can handle this grade.”

The daughter of Elvstroem is coming off a 3.5-length win at Launceston in May where it dominated a quality local field on a heavy track. Brunton has given it time to recover from the run and is back to try its hand in Melbourne.

“We’ve given her a good break since that win and considering how well the Tasmanian horses have gone this season, she’s not without a chance despite the track,” Brunton said.

“She steps up in grade a touch to rating 90, but she takes on her own sex here which she hasn’t been able to race against at home.”

Step The Pedal has drawn barrier one which could offer some cut out of the ground for the eight-time winner on wet tracks.

“We’ll look to use the draw and hopefully there’s some cut out of the track, but it’s only race three so we’ll just have to see how it plays,” Brunton said.

The $9.50 chance at Sportsbet.com.au is a chance at staying on in Victoria with everything going well at Flemington.

“If she goes well today we might look at sending her to Patrick (Payne) and she can spend some time here,” Brunton said.

Stablemate Lord Da Vinci is another runner which will stay in Melbourne following its impressive win at Moonee Valley last start.

The six-year-old by Lonhro defeated a handy field in the GJK Facility Services Handicap on June 17 and will now target the $100,000 Handicap at Caulfield on July 15.

“He has been good since his win and we’ll look to keep him here for another run at Caulfield,” Brunton added.

Brunton also indicated that 2017 Hobart Cup winner Count Da Vinci could also feature during the Melbourne winter.
