Perth Cup winner Star Exhibit has made an instant impression in the eastern states with a Listed win at his first start for Victoria’s premier trainer Darren Weir at Caulfield.

Star Exhibit won the Group Two Perth Cup (2400m) on December 31 and owner Bob Peters then sent the gelding across to the Weir stable.

After settling with a three-wide trail in Saturday’s Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1440m) under jockey Brad Rawiller, Star Exhibit showed his class to overhaul Charmed Harmony and win by three-quarters of a length.

Top Me Up held third after leading, another long neck away.

“He’s the real deal,” Weir’s Warrnambool stable foreman Jarrod McLean said.

“He came to us in great order as they always do coming over from Perth.

“He had been going great at home but you just like to see them come here and do it.”

Heart Starter, another of Peters’ horses who has joined Weir’s team from WA, over-raced back in the field and finished sixth but jockey Craig Williams said he liked the way the four-year-old finished the race off.

Weir was in Adelaide on Saturday and McLean said they were unsure whether Star Exhibit would head on a Group Two Brisbane Cup (2400m) path like another Perth Cup winner Real Love last year, or whether he would be aimed at the Group One Doomben Cup (2000m).

“But there’s no better than D K Weir to find the right race and wherever he turns up he’ll be running well,” McLean said.

“The other bloke was pretty good too. He just never got into a rhythm for Craig but the run should really bring him on and he’s probably heading to Queensland as well.”

Star Exhibit gave Weir his 110th metropolitan winner in Victoria for the season.
