A fantastic Melbourne Cup Carnival comes to an end this Saturday with a nine-race card headlined by the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes. As mentioned in our runner-by-runner preview of the Springtime Stakes, it’s hard to ignore the impressive start to Deep Speed’s career. He gave nothing else a chance at The Valley last Friday night and didn’t look like he was slowing down when going through the line and winning by two lengths. He’s shown so far in his career that he will appreciate the step up in class to Listed level, and the same can be said for the 1400m. From barrier three, Luke Currie should have no issues in getting him to the front and dictating terms in the first black-type race on the card.
Joseph O’Brien’s gelding looked to have been a good thing when beaten in the Bendigo Cup 10 days ago. He seemed to get too far back in the running and only just missed in a heartbreaking watch for punters. He will only benefit from the first-up run in Australia, and if he can follow in the footsteps that Ashrun showed in the lead up to his Melbourne Cup run, then Pomdus will be too hard to hold out in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
The form that has come out of Vegas Knight’s last-start win should not be ignored. On Blue Sapphire Stakes Day, he took out a BM78 and beat home Irish Flame and Yulong Rising – both subsequent winners during Melbourne Cup Week at Flemington. He had been building nicely to that win with minor placings at Mornington and Sandown in the lead up. He put a big gap on his rivals at Caulfield, and he rates highly here with Jordan Childs retaining the ride.
