Speedy Stampe has no trouble with 1350m

Distance doubts about Stampe were no cause for concern in his win over 1350m at Doomben.

Trainer Chris Munce’s fears that three-year-old Stampe might not run a strong 1350m were quickly shown to be baseless at Doomben.

Stampe ($7) had no trouble humping 59kg to beat the favourite Astro Boy Toy ($2.20) by a half length in the River Junction Handicap (1350m).

Munce said Stampe had shown a good deal of ability early in his two-year-old season but had hit a flat spot.

“But this time in he has been most consistent. He ran good time winning at the Gold Coast at his previous start and beat Magic Trick who won the first race here today.

“If there was a negative it was going to be him getting a strong 1350m with 59kg.”

Stampe, who is by underrated sire Whittington, lifted his prize money and bonus payments to more than $130,000 with the win.

“The owners bred him and kept him so it has been a good result for them. We will have to look for some more QTIS races for him now,” Munce said.
