TRAINER Darren Wier has confirmed star sprinter Speedeor will travel to Queensland to compete on the Gold Coast in January after taking out the Magic Millions three and four year old classic in impressive style at Ballarat.

Speedeor missed the kick early and but forged his way into second before scorching away from the field in the final 200m to record one of the performances of the day as a $2.10 favourite at Sportsbet.com.au.

Despite recording one of the more stylish wins of the day, jockey Luke Nolen described as ‘tradesman-like’.

“It (was) nice to see him round it off,” Nolen said.

Trainer Darren Wier reiterated Nolan’s comments, believing the three-year-old worked hard early in the piece, but said he was never worried that the race was out of his reach.

“When he stepped away a bit slow he had to muster a bit and get outside the leader, but he looked to be travelling well on the corner,” Weir said.

The leader was never troubled, but Dam Ready ($2.30 at WilliamHill.com.au) hit the line strongly after coming under pressure early while Golden Spin held on well to finish third.

The promising colt made it two wins in a row after saluting on Melbourne Cup day at $7.50 odds in the $100,000 Flemington Fling.

Wier earmarked today’s race as a good indicator as to whether Speedeor will make the trip north, and the champion trainer confirmed his runner will compete in the Magic Millions race in January after the win.

“I think he’ll come on a bit more from that, 1400m won’t be a problem because he’ll be up on the speed [so] we’ll have a crack at the Gold Coast now,” He said.

“I’m not sure which way we go about it, but he doesn’t need a lot of racing, he’s a very fit horse, he’s got a great racing style for up there … (and) all signs are positive heading up to Queensland.”

The three-year-old looks to be one of the more promising horses to emerge this spring and proved on Ballarat Cup day that a change in scenery will be no issue.

Nolen said Speedeor has the ideal trainer heading into January where the jockey he will likely team up with the progressive colt once again.

“Darren (can) get a horse to peak more than once in a prep,” He said.

“He’ll probably back off him now with that in mind, I won’t dare tell him what to do but I’m happy to keep the ride.”
