Spalato dominates in Singapore with Australia in mind

SpalatoClassy Singapore-based runner Spalato toyed with rivals in the Jumbo Jet Trophy at Kranji on Sunday night.

Spalato was the dominating favourite after War Affair was scratched due to injury and the win was never in doubt from the barrier jump.

Jockey Manoel Nunes was five lengths in front before easing down inside the final furlong to win by 1.5 lengths, and now a possible trip to Australia is on the cards.

“There are some good races here in Singapore and there are some good races in Australia, too,” said part-owner Graham Mackie.

The Group 1 Kranji Mile on October 4 is the likely target for the New Zealand-bred, but Mackie hasn’t made a decision as yet.

“We’ll let you know as soon as possible which way he’s going,” Mackie added.

Nunes quipped that his hands were red from holding the son of Elusive City back.

“When I took him to the front he was a bit keen,” Nunes said. “He didn’t want to settle at all and grabbed the bit.

“As I didn’t want to fight him, I had no choice but to put my hands down just to let him roll along coming down the back.

“But once he came back underneath me, he ran quite relaxed. All I wanted was to look after him as he’s the best horse in the race.

“I just wished he would settle better for me, but it didn’t matter today as he was just too good. I eased down on him once I knew he had the race won.”

Spalato doesn’t currently hold a nomination for the 2015 Cox Plate, but it would not look out of place in the final field. We’re predicting a price around $15 if the winner of eight from 10 does make the field.
