Snippets Land dives late to score BRC Sprint at Doomben

Peter and Paul Snowden got into the thick of the action at Doomben on Saturday with one of their lesser-fancied runners.

Five-year-old gelding Snippets Land was a $15 chance at Sportsbet in the BRC Sprint, but it demonstrated a slick sprint from the 100m mark to score the big upset over the well-backed Religify ($3.80) and Artlee ($3.90).

The now six-time winner ran home in 11.53 which is scintillating and now likely target the QTC Cup on June 4.

“All credit to the horse, he’s no superstar, but very genuine,” co-trainer Peter Snowden said. “It was his grand final, he wasn’t even going to run here, he was going to run in a months time.

“Snippets Land did a good job when he was second in the Prime Minister’s Cup at his previous start and he has gone one better today.

“But really he is a just off the top horses and I am more likely to run him in the QTC Cup on June 4 than the Stradbroke a week later.”

As predicted prior to the race, Religify piled on the pressure up front which left Charmed Harmony sitting four wide down the back straight. Artlee had the prime run in behind, but over-raced throughout and Snippets Land was able to find itself in a threatening position.

Jockey Blake Shinn was having an indifferent day with one late scratching at the barriers and two placings, but he couldn’t have ridden Snippets Land any better as it sprouted wings late to nab Religify on the line.

The son of Snippetson came into the race on the back of a placing in the Prime Minister’s Cup and that form showed up again.

“It was super [its Prime Minister’s Cup run]. He got in well on the weights, settled nicely and maneuvered into the clear at the turn,” Shinn said. “He knuckled down and had that desire to win today.”

Shinn will ride New Zealand runner Volkstok’n’barrell in the Group 1 Doomben Cup and was bullish about its chances later in the day.

“I thought his run had a lot of merit,” Shinn said. “He’s trained on nicely Donna [Logan, co-trainer] said throughout the week.

“I think he’s going to run a big race today.”

The four-year-old has been hammered on the fixed odds market at Sportsbet after opening at $6. It now stands as the clear second favourite at $5 and that price is expected to firm again late.
