Slipper favourite ticks all boxes: Newitt

Craig Newitt has a spring in his step as he approaches Golden Slipper day.

Having ridden two Group One winners in recent weeks, Newitt is riding the crest of a wave into the world’s richest two-year-old race.

A trip to Sydney to ride Slipper favourite Extreme Choice in a Rosehill gallop boosted his confidence and the smile couldn’t be wiped from his face after Tuesday’s barrier draw.

“I said I wanted one to six and he drew seven, which I was a bit dirty on, but then the emergency drew four so he comes out of six,” Newitt joked.

Extreme Choice heads the market at $2.80 over his Mick Price-trained stablemate Flying Artie at $5.

The pair ran one-two in last month’s Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield and worked together on the course proper at Rosehill on Tuesday.

While confident of Extreme Choice’s chances, Newitt is not getting too confident, noting there are five unbeaten two-year-olds racing for $3.5 million in prize money.

The Extreme Choice ride came about for Newitt after Damien Oliver elected to ride Flying Artie in the Blue Diamond.

“I’m happy Ollie made that call,” Newitt said.

“There’s not much between them and I don’t think there’ll be much between them on Saturday.

“I just hope my bloke’s got his head in front.”
