Sistine Demon out to break long drought

Andrew Noblet has changed his training methods with Sistine Demon in a bid to get the gelding back to winning form.

Sistine Demon will be chasing his first victory in two years in the Listed Anniversary Vase (1400m) at Caulfield.

The gelding’s last win was in the Group Three Victoria Handicap over the same course and distance as Saturday’s race during the Easter meeting in 2014.

Sistine Demon has had 12 starts since, filling a place on only two occasions, with Noblet hoping beach work will reinvigorate the six-year-old.

“We’ve taken a bit of a different approach with him this time,” Noblet said.

“He’s done a bit of work down at the beach in the last few weeks and had a course-proper gallop here on Tuesday morning and he worked really well.

“Unfortunately with him you won’t know what you’ll get from him until race day.

“He looks super well and he’s worked well, so fingers crossed.”

Sistine Demon had three starts last campaign, starting with a third placing at Moonee Valley before he finished last at his next two starts at Flemington and Caulfield.

Noblet said Sistine Demon had suffered bone bruising and, while he performed well fresh, the hard tracks over summer took their toll.

For that reason Noblet elected to freshen Sistine Demon and send the gelding to the seaside at Warrnambool.

Noblet said Sistine Demon had been wading in the salt water while also working through the sand dunes to ready him for a return for racing.

As for any long terms plans, Noblet just wants to see how he performs on Saturday before making any decision about the six-year-old’s future.

“It’s the old cliche, one run at a time with him, but hopefully he comes through it well and we’ll then decide what to do with him after that,” Noblet said.

Luke Currie will partner Sistine Demon who is at $15 with Charmed Harmony holding favouritism at $5.50 in an open betting race ahead of Yesterday’s Songs at $6 and Dan Zephyr at $7.
