Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes 2020 betting tips & form guide

Pretty Brazen
Pretty Brazen heads to the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes on the back of an impressive win at Flemington last week.

This Saturday’s Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield looks a wide-open race, with just the two runners in single figures. Memsie Stakes winner Behemoth will start favourite ahead of the sole three-year-old in the field, Tagaloa. It will be a fast race, with Dollar For Dollar, Age Of Chivaly, Begood Toya Mother, Streets Of Avalon and Archenar Star all likely to vie for the premier spot. The pace will only be increased if emergencies Gold Fields and Runson make their way into the field.

Best Bet
Pretty Brazen @ $15

We were impressed by what Pretty Brazen did seven days ago at Flemington. She gets a good firm surface here and will like the fast pace up front. From barrier 10, Luke Currie will be able to settle on the outside with cover and chime in at the top of the straight. She is a genuine 1400m horse, in our opinion, so the conditions will suit. She drops 3.5kg from last weekend’s win when she beat Arcadia Queen, so she should appreciate going from level-top weight to only half a kilo above the minimum. We know the McEvoy stable have a big opinion of the mare and believe they would’ve only backed her up if she was a huge chance.

Next Best
Behemoth @ $4.40

Behemoth was superb in winning the Group 1 Memsie Stakes at his last outing thanks to a brilliant ride by Craig Williams. He stays at 1400m as he shoots for three wins in a row but has to carry the top weight of 60kg, going from WFA to a handicap. He’s drawn to get the run of the race from barrier five again, tucked away behind the speed, but he will need some luck in the straight given how many horses might be in front of him. The son of All Too Hard should probably have two Goodwood Handicaps to his name, but he often finds bad luck in running. He is unbeaten at 1400m and won at Caulfield last start, so he simply cannot be ignored. He will need luck, but he is the one to beat.

Best Value
Pretty Brazen @ $11

We keep coming back to the Godolphin runner Cascadian, who continues to put in flashing-light runs from the tail and has finished fourth both times we have been on him. This race maps really well for him, however, because there should be plenty of speed on to set it up for a late blitz. Damien Oliver knows the horse really well now, so we’d love to see him settle two or three spots better here as Caulfield can be a difficult track to make up ground on. Jumping from barrier eight, he will be back in the run and flying home late. He meets Behemoth 2kg better at the weights and only finished 2.35L off him last start in the Memsie, so this looks a good each-way play.
