Single Gaze wins Vinery for Olive, O’Hara

Nick Olive has trained his first Group One winner with Single Gaze defying her rivals in the Vinery Stud Stakes at Rosehill.

“I’m numb. I’m absolutely numb. It’s every trainer’s dream to win a Group One,” Canberra-based Olive said.

“I’ve been so relaxed all week. I didn’t realise why no-one wanted a bar of her.”

Despite a last-start win in the Kembla Grange Classic, Single Gaze wasn’t rated among the leading Vinery chances because of doubts about her getting a strong 2000m.

Kathy O’Hara put Single Gaze in a forward position and the unheralded filly shot to the lead at the 300m.

There were no shortage of challengers but Single Gaze held on bravely to beat Valley Girl and Happy Hannah to give O’Hara her second Group One success.
